Honda/Tristan would be an important character in almost any other shonen. He just had the bad luck to appear in one where physical strength, fighting ability, sheer guts and a badass bike don't count for much, and you're useless when you can't play strategy games at a high level and don't have either money & tech or supernatural powers.

He is in fact important in the original version where he helps the team during Death-T. They just didn't know what to do with him in the anime where they focused solely on card games.

@@cupidok2768 fwiw I'm a real female and I would have been even more thrilled to see Anzu or Ishizu or Mai taking names and kicking way more heads in during this show. And just more main female characters in general. At least Mai has a motorbike and did have talent at strategy games that we saw onscreen. Alas, I think it's clear YGO as a show and a game were marketed heavily toward boys, and it shows in the stereotyping.
